Suburban Retrofit of an Industrial Park

Client: Research Project at NBBJ
Brief: Intensification and diversification of an Industrial Park
Size: 2.6 hectares
Status: Report completed

This research project explored retrofitting a light industrial suburban area, adjacent to a commuter station, by intensifying it with affordable housing, community infrastructure and new types of work space. Using natural systems to improve connectivity, the study brings health and well-being to an otherwise isolated car-dominant suburb. Surface parking presents an opportunity for new housing next to the train station, while underutilized industrial space can be intensified to create new jobs. By clearly defining blocks and separating access routes, new housing, civic and commercial spaces can coexist with existing light industry. The ambition is that this study provides a template for improving industrial suburbs across the globe.
